MODE OF ACTION:
Naturally occurring odourless source of bioavailable nutritional sulfur for horses, sulfur being an essential bonding element in horse's hooves, skin, hair and connective tissue. It also occurs in certain enzymes, hormones and immunoglobulins (antibodies). Primary benefits of MSM are its anti-inflammatory and circulatory enhancement properties. MSM has a number of health normalising activities. It reduces the time for recovery from a maximum competitive performance effect. Recovery time to normalcy is about 25% of the pre-MSM experience. MSM has an anti-allergic effect by competing with ingested toxins or allergens for binding sites. The drying and processing of horse feeds considerably reduces or completely destroys methylsulfonylmethane.
INDICATIONS:
Nutritional supplement to aid in the prevention of sulfur deficiency in the diet of horses. Specific conditions that have responded to MSM use include:
Epiphysitis in young growing horses, acute laminitis, early navicular disease, hoof growth problems, hair coat condition, infertility in geriatric mares, gastric ulcers and other problems of the digestive tract in young foals.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
For oral use only. May be mixed in the feed or dissolved in a small amount of warm water and syringed directly into the mouth. Suggested daily minimum amount for oral use is 4 - 8mg/kg bodyweight, equivalent to 2 - 4g per 450g bodyweight in feed. With tissue breakdown, increased dosage is required. To treat epiphysitis in weanlings 6 - 8g twice daily in the feed has been used. The most commonly used increased dose rate for the adult horse is 12-15g twice daily in the feed.
WITHHOLDING PERIODS:
MEAT - Nil.
