Peptosyl is a non-antibiotic treatment for non-infectious and dietary diarrhoea in dogs. The insoluble Bismuth sub-salicylate salt is convereted to Bismuth carbonate and sodium salicylate after oral administration. This lines the mucosal surface of the stomach and intestines, absorbs toxic compounds such as endotoxins, and has protective, antacid, and antiseptic qualities. It is mildly astringent. The salicylate component of Peptosyl is anti-inflammatory, and rapidly reduces the pain and effusion associated with gastro-intestinal disturbances.
Peptosyl is non-antibiotic. It will not cause bacterial resistance to develop.
Peptosyl is non-toxic.
Bismuth salicylate and other Bismuth salts have been demonstrated to inhibit plaque formation of enteric rotavirus in vitro. The salicylate component has an anti-prostaglandin synthetase effect which may enhance its action in controlling acute secretory diarrhoea. Bentonite is a natural clay earth with properties similar to activated charcoal, and the ability to bind bacterial endotoxin.

0.25 to 0.5mL per kg bodyweight.
(6.5 to 12.5mL per 25kg)
Repeat dose every 6 hours for 36 hours and then at 12 hour intervals for a further 2-3 days.
Administer Peptosyl by mouth. Where possible, withhold food for 24 hours then give bland, low fat meals for several days.
